From Hilo, we drove back to Kona and stayed the rest of the time at the
Kokoke Lani Bed and Breakfast. Patsy and Rod were great and we had a
really nice time getting to know them. Another place we highly recommend.
It's about 800' up (again?) and looks out onto the ocean. Be nice
to the guard geckos.
Here we ventured out onto the water, scheduling a night dive--the first
for both of us. The islands had been having a bad swell (very high surf)
for a couple of weeks, the duration of which is unusual. In fact, the
first few days we were there, there were civil defense warnings and many beaches
were closed. But we weren't to be deterred (especially having carried
our fins that far). We did pay for it, both getting very sick during
the surface interval. But it was still pretty cool seeing a big barracuda,
a huge crown of thorns star fish (and a snail happy to get a chance to eat
it) some turtles, plenty of fish including a very big flounder. Below,
in 47e, Nina demonstrates the new international sign for tuna.
