We stayed two nights in the secluded "volcano resort". The room was
in a stand alone, hexagonal structure called the Sanctuary. Indeed it
was. We highly recommend this place for a completely peaceful getaway.
Assume the volcano doesn't make too much of an eruption.
From Volcano, we went to Hilo where we stayed a night. The B&B
was nothing to write home about. But the town of Hilo is clearly the
place to be if you were going to stay in Hawaii long term. We took a
helicopter ride and saw real lava flows (next page). Cap'n Joyce was
our pilot. She didn't do the stunts that the other couple wanted, kindly
enough.
Although we don't have any pics of it, we drove up to Mauna Loa to the
observatory. This was great. They had 10 - 14 " telescopes out
and we saw the rings of Saturn, the star nursery of the Orion Nebula and bands
and moons of Jupiter. Nina drove down and didn't touch the accelerator
for the entire 28 miles.
