We hiked out to where the lava meets the ocean. In the enlargement
of pic 24, below, you can just see the glow of burning where the lava was
probably igniting something in the water. From this lookout, we hiked
another 15 minutes to get "up close and personal" with the lava. The pics
aren't great. but you get the idea. When the lave moved more than a
foot, (within a few seconds) the crowd would give a big cheer. It's
not clear how they kept all the tourists corralled, but maybe 2000° rock
has its own controlling mechanism. The ground feels hot enough to melt
your shoes, but it's great fun to romp over.
One of the amusing points is when you get to the end of the road and lava
has just engulfed it (pic 22 below.) Good thing it moves so slowly.
