How To Get To Varenna

(All roads lead through Milan)

Air: Milan Malpensa is the main airport with international flights. It is inconveniently located 50 Km north-west of Milan. Most airlines will route you through a major European city, ie: London, Paris, Frankfurt. There is a second, smaller airport Milan Linate, located more centrally.

From Milan Malpensa to Varenna: there are two basic option:

  1. Direct taxi ride, probably 1 to 1 ½ hour ride, we were quoted about $100.

  2. Shuttle bus to the Stazione Centrale - there is direct service that departs about every 20-30 minutes, and it's a 50 minute ride. There are at least two different names for the same service: Malpensa Express & Air Pullman. You can then catch a train to Varenna, see below.
Train: There is a train station in Varenna that links directly with Milan. The best way to go from Milan is starting at the main train station: Stazione Centrale. From there a train leaves every 2 hours, at last check in 7/01, it was 8:15, 10:10, 12:15. Look for the destination city of Tirano when looking at the schedule.

Ferry: If you want a leisurely and scenic cruise on Lake Como, take the ferry from the town of Como to Varenna, it's about 2 ½ hours. There is also constant ferry service from Bellagio, a 20 minute ride.
